THE CURTAIN rose the play beganA
The limelight on the gay garbs shoneB
Yet carelessly I gazed uponC
The painted players maid and manA
As one with idle eyes who seesD
The marble figures on a friezeD
Long lark notes clear the first act closeE
So the soprano then a hushF
The tenor tender as a thrushF
Then loud and high the chorus roseG
Till with a sudden rush and strongH
It ended in a storm of songH
-
The curtain fell the music diedI
The lights grew bright revealing thereJ
The flash of jewelled fingers fairJ
And wreaths of pearls on brows of prideI
Then with a quick flushed cheek I turnedK
And into mine her dark eyes burnedK
-
Such eyes but once a man may seeL
And seeing once his fancy diesM
To thought of any other eyesM
So shadow soft they seemed to beL
Twin haunted lakes lit by the gleamsN
Of a mysterious moon of dreamsN
-
Silk lashes veiled their liquid lightO
With such a shade as tall reeds flingP
From the lake marge at sunsettingP
Their darkness might have hid the nightO
Yet whoso saw their glance would sayQ
Night dreamt therein and saw the dayQ
-
Long looked I at them wonderingP
What tender memories were hidR
Beneath each blue veined lily lidR
What hopes of joys the years would bringP
What griefs In vain I might not guessS
The secret of their silentnessS
-
What of her face Her face meseemsS
Was such as painters see who museS
By moonlight in dim avenuesS
Yet cannot paint or as in dreamsS
Young poets see but when they tryT
To limn in verse are dumb so IT
-
Yet well I know that I have seenU
That sweet face in the long agoP
In a rose bower well I knowP
Laughing the singing leaves betweenU
In that strange land of rose and rhymeV
The land of Once upon a TimeV
-
O unknown sweet so sweetly knownB
I know not what your name may beL
Madonna is your name for meL
Nor where your lines in life are thrownB
But soul sees soul what is the restW
A passing phantom at the bestW
-
Did your young bosom never glowP
To love or burns your heart beneathX
As burns the rosebud in its sheathX
I neither know nor wish to knowP
I smell the rose upon the treeL
Who will may pluck and wear for meL
-
May wear the rose and watch it dieT
And leaf by red leaf fade and fallY
Till there be nothing left at allY
Of its sweet loveliness but IT
Love it so well I leave it freeL
The scent alone I take with meL
-
As one who visits sacred spotsS
Brings tokens back so I from youZ
A glance a smile a rapture newZ
And these are my forget me notsS
I take from you but only theseS
Give all the rest to whom you pleaseS
-
Sweet eyes your glance a light shall castA2
On me when dreaded ghosts ariseS
Of dead regrets with shrouded eyesS
And phantoms of the perished pastA2
Old thoughts old hopes and old desireB2
Gather around my lonely fireB2
-
Farewell In rhyme I kiss your handC2
Kiss not unsweet although unheardD2
This is our secret say no wordD2
That I have been in FairylandC2
And seen for one brief moment s spaceS
The Queen Titania face to faceS
