The limelight on the gay garbs shone | B |
Yet carelessly I gazed upon | C |
The painted players maid and man | A |
As one with idle eyes who sees | D |
The marble figures on a frieze | D |
Long lark notes clear the first act close | E |
So the soprano then a hush | F |
The tenor tender as a thrush | F |
Then loud and high the chorus rose | G |
Till with a sudden rush and strong | H |
It ended in a storm of song | H |
- | |
The curtain fell the music died | I |
The lights grew bright revealing there | J |
The flash of jewelled fingers fair | J |
And wreaths of pearls on brows of pride | I |
Then with a quick flushed cheek I turned | K |
And into mine her dark eyes burned | K |
- | |
Such eyes but once a man may see | L |
And seeing once his fancy dies | M |
To thought of any other eyes | M |
So shadow soft they seemed to be | L |
Twin haunted lakes lit by the gleams | N |
Of a mysterious moon of dreams | N |
- | |
Silk lashes veiled their liquid light | O |
With such a shade as tall reeds fling | P |
From the lake marge at sunsetting | P |
Their darkness might have hid the night | O |
Yet whoso saw their glance would say | Q |
Night dreamt therein and saw the day | Q |
- | |
Long looked I at them wondering | P |
What tender memories were hid | R |
Beneath each blue veined lily lid | R |
What hopes of joys the years would bring | P |
What griefs In vain I might not guess | S |
The secret of their silentness | S |
- | |
What of her face Her face meseems | S |
Was such as painters see who muse | S |
By moonlight in dim avenues | S |
Yet cannot paint or as in dreams | S |
Young poets see but when they try | T |
To limn in verse are dumb so I | T |
- | |
Yet well I know that I have seen | U |
That sweet face in the long ago | P |
In a rose bower well I know | P |
Laughing the singing leaves between | U |
In that strange land of rose and rhyme | V |
The land of Once upon a Time | V |
- | |
O unknown sweet so sweetly known | B |
I know not what your name may be | L |
Madonna is your name for me | L |
Nor where your lines in life are thrown | B |
But soul sees soul what is the rest | W |
A passing phantom at the best | W |
- | |
Did your young bosom never glow | P |
To love or burns your heart beneath | X |
As burns the rosebud in its sheath | X |
I neither know nor wish to know | P |
I smell the rose upon the tree | L |
Who will may pluck and wear for me | L |
- | |
May wear the rose and watch it die | T |
And leaf by red leaf fade and fall | Y |
Till there be nothing left at all | Y |
Of its sweet loveliness but I | T |
Love it so well I leave it free | L |
The scent alone I take with me | L |
- | |
As one who visits sacred spots | S |
Brings tokens back so I from you | Z |
A glance a smile a rapture new | Z |
And these are my forget me nots | S |
I take from you but only these | S |
Give all the rest to whom you please | S |
- | |
Sweet eyes your glance a light shall cast | A2 |
On me when dreaded ghosts arise | S |
Of dead regrets with shrouded eyes | S |
And phantoms of the perished past | A2 |
Old thoughts old hopes and old desire | B2 |
Gather around my lonely fire | B2 |
