Half waking and half dreamingA
While starry lamps hung lowB
I saw a vision splendidC
Upon the darkness glowB
-
The Capital AustralianD
With waving banners plumedC
A shining flower of marbleE
Magnificently bloomedC
-
Beside a snow fed riverF
'Twas built in fashion rareG
Upon a lofty mountainD
All in a valley fairG
-
The stately ships were sailingA
Like brides with flowing trainsH
To seek its secret harborF
Amidst Australian plainsH
-
And all around it flourishedC
Luxuriantly freeI
The giant gum and mangroveJ
The crimson desert peaI
-
And I beheld a buildingA
That made a stately showB
The National AustralianD
Head Poetry BureauB
-
I gazed upon that BuildingA
With trembling joy aghastC
The long felt want of agesK
Was filled I thought at lastC
-
No more the Native PoetC
Need wildly beat his headC
For lofty lyric measuresL
To buy him beer and bedC
-
Now he would lodge right noblyI
And sleep serene secureM
All in a chamber filled withN
Adhesive furnitureF
-
For never foot of BailiffO
Should pass his threshold o'erF
And never knock of landlordC
Sound direful on his doorP
-
The State should also aid himQ
To build his lofty rhymeR
On lordly eggs and baconD
And sausages sublimeR
-
And he should drink no longerF
Cheap beer at common barS
But royal wine of WunghnuD
At two and nine the jarS
-
It was a vision splendidC
And brighter still did growB
When I was made the Chief ofT
The Poetry BureauB
-
They clad me all in purpleE
They hung me with festoonsL
My singing robes were spangledC
With aluminium moonsL
-
And as a sign of geniusL
Above the common kindC
A wreath of gilded laurelE
Around my hat they twinedC
-
They also gave me power toC
The grain sift from the chaffU
And choose at my large pleasureF
My own poetic staffU
-
Then straightaway I appointedC
To chant by day and nightC
The brilliant young AustralianD
Who sang 'The Land of Light '-
-
I also gave in fashionD
Hilariously freeI
The Girl and Horse DepartmentC
In charge of OgilvieI
-
And on the roof ridge BradyI
Sang salt junk chanties greatC
To cheer the stout sea lawyersL
Who sail the Ship of StateC
-
And tender hearted LawsonD
Sang everybody's wrongsL
And Brennan in the basementC
Crooned weird symbolic songsL
-
And on the throne beside meI
Above the common dinD
He sang his Songs of BeautyI
My friend the poet QuinnD
-
Our own Australian artistsL
Made beautiful its hallsL
The mighty steeds of MahonyI
Pranced proudly on the wallsL
-
Tom Roberts he was there tooC
With painted portraits fineD
Of men of light and leadingA
Me and some friends of mineD
-
And Souter's Leering LadyI
'Neath hat and over fanD
With Souter's cat was oglingA
His check clothed gentlemanD
-
And Fischer Ashton ListerF
With beetling genius rifeV
Pardieu I was their PatronD
And set them up for lifeV
-
And from each dusky cornerF
In petrified new birthW
Glared busts of Me and BartonD
By Nelson IllingworthW
-
And nine fair Muses dwelt thereG
With board and lodging freeI
Six by the States were chosenD
And I selected threeI
-
And there we turned out blithelyI
Australian poems soundC
To sell in lengths like carpetC
And also by the poundC
-
For Paddy Quinn the StatesmanD
Had made a law which saidC
That native authors onlyI
On pain of death be readC
-
O brother bards I grieve thatC
Good dreams do not come trueC
You see how very noblyI
I would have done to youC
-
But ah the vision vanishedC
And took away in towB
