My dear Next ChristmasA
It is an excellent journalistic thingB
Not to say a poetical thingB
To be first in the fieldC
Behold me therefore advancingB
At the head of that motley armyD
Which will inevitably hail youE
When your time comesF
For your predecessorG
My dear Next ChristmasA
I cannot say muchH
He came in with several thousand inches of rainI
He went out on a watery moonJ
There was turkey as usualK
Pudding as usualK
Mistletoe as usualK
Peace on earth as usualK
There were also the waitsL
The young folksM
The postmanN
The dustmanN
No connection with the scavengersO
And the turncockB
We had a merry dayP
Half the world pretended to be happyD
The other half pretended to be boredQ
The festivities I understandR
Are still being kept upS
There is a ping pong tournament at the Queen's HallT
And a children's banquetU
At the Guildhall on Tuesday eveningB
Not to mention Mr Dan Leno at Drury LaneI
And Mr De Wet at the TweefonteinI
It is all very cheerfulK
And very inspiritingB
All the sameV
Let us not repineI
Christmas comes but once a yearW
And it will come again I fearW
This couplet of courseX
My dear Next ChristmasA
Is not intended to beD
Disrespectful to youE
It is inserted simplyD
For the sake of effectY
For I never miss an opportunityD
Of bursting into rhymeZ
When the way is plain before meD
My dear Next ChristmasA
Do not be discouragedA2
Come next year by all meansB2
If I said Don't comeC2
You would come just the sameV
Therefore I say ComeC2
And I trust my dear Next ChristmasA
That when you do comeC2
You will bring us a little luckB
Ring out the old as it wereG
And ring in the newE
Let candied peelD2
Be a trifle cheaperG
Let the war be settledE2
To the satisfaction of both partiesF2
Let the book trade flourishG2
Let the Income tax be reducedH2
Let there be a fine Christmas EveI2
And dry waitsL
And a little skating next morningB
Let there be peace and plentyD
A pocket full of moneyD
And a barrel full of beerW
And all other good thingsJ2
Including a free and enlightened PressK2
And a strong demandR
For seasonable poetryD
My dear Next ChristmasA
Here is my handR
With my heart in itL2
Till we meet againI
As Mr Hall Caine saysM2
AddioL2
