My dear EverybodyA
The other day I lunched at a placeB
Where there was a pretty ladyA
During the course of the talkC
The pretty lady said to meA
You see Everybody is out of townD
At presentE
I said Who is EverybodyA
Whereupon the pretty lady repliedF
Well er EverybodyA
I said Quite soG
But don't you think it is ratherH
Fortunate that Everybody is out of townD
And the pretty lady answered and saidI
NoG
I conclude thereforeJ
That you EverybodyA
Must on the whole be rather niceK
I hope you areL
For Everybody should be rather niceK
Should they notM
And when I come to think of itN
The circumstance that I heard of youO
The other dayP
Has nothing prodigiously unusual about itN
Really and trulyA
One is always hearing about youO
One is believe meA
For example the paragraph writers assure meA
That Everybody is readingQ
Miss So and So's great novelR
Also that Everybody will join with themS
In congratulating Miss So and So on her approaching marriageT
Also that Everybody is in the HighlandsU
That Everybody anticipates a good seasonV
That Everybody keeps a houseboatW
That Everybody sups at the Carlton after the theatreH
That Everybody recognises in Lord Salisbury a great statesmanV
That Everybody plays golfX
That Everybody who can afford it dresses wellY
That Everybody knows the King has tactZ
That Everybody thinks the Queen grows younger as she grows olderH
That Everybody hopes Sir Thomas LiptonV
Will win the America CupA2
And so onB2
Which is wellY
I don't mind in the leastC2
Why should ID2
Yet if I were EverybodyA
I imagine that I should not do thingsE2
Quite in the same way that you do themS
To my mind your great defect is that you do thingsE2
Not because you like to do themS
But simply becauseF2
Everybody does themS
This is an excellent reasonV
From your point of viewO
But to me it seems a trifle stupidG2
Who is reading Miss So and So's bookH2
EverybodyA
Why are they reading itN
Because Everybody is reading itN
Do they like Miss So and So's bookH2
They are not quite sureI2
But Everybody says it is goodJ2
And therefore Everybody must read itN
Why are frock coats wornK2
Because Everybody wears themS
Why does Everybody wear themS
Because Everybody wears themS
Why does Everybody dine at a certain restaurantL2
Because Everybody dines thereM2
Why does Everybody dine thereM2
Because Everybody dines thereM2
Why doesN2
But thereM2
I forbearM2
Did time allow I might multiply instancesN2
Till Everybody felt boredO2
But I stay min' handP2
Enough you know is as good as a feastC2
Likewise better a stalled oxQ2
Than a dinner of herbsR2
Everybody says soG
Wherefore I am constrained to believe itN
By way of conclusion let us ask ourselvesS2
What is happening just nowT2
Everybody saysU2
That nothing is happening just nowT2
And that everything is frightfully dullR
AndV2
EverybodyA
Is-
