IA
-
I heard the young lads singingB
In the still morning airC
Gaily the notes came ringingB
Across the lilac'd squareC
They sang like happy childrenD
Who know not doubt or careC
As WE GO MARCHING ONE
-
And each one sloped a rifleF
And each one bore a packG
They had no grief to stifleF
No tears to weep alackG
They were too blithe to questionD
Which of them should come backG
As they went marching onE
-
IIA
-
Oh thou whose eyes are sorrowH
And whose soul is sorrowingG
Who knowest that each to morrowH
A deeper woe may bringG
And knowest that all the comfortI
Is the very littlest thingG
While they go marching onE
-
These sons of thine seek gloryJ
As the bridegroom seeks the brideK
And who shall tell the storyJ
Of their triumph and their prideK
Like lovers for the love of theeJ
They have lain them down and diedK
And they go marching onE
-
IIIA
-
They march by field and cityJ
By every road and wayL
A march which angels pityJ
And none may stop or stayL
Till the last head is restedM
On the last crimson clayL
So they go marching onE
-
They march in the broad sunlightN
And by the lovers' moonO
Into the flame and gun lightN
From morns and eves of JuneO
And Death for their entranc d feetP
Pipes an obsequious tuneO
And keeps them marching onE
-
IV-
-
And mid the battle thunderQ
And in the fields of bloodM
They see the untarnished wonderQ
The healing and the goodR
Which passeth understandingG
And can not be understoodR
And they go marching onE
-
They see the rose's brightnessS
Made perfect and completeP
Lilies and snows of whitenessS
And wings of gold that beatP
For ever and for everQ
Before the ParacleteP
And they go marching onE
