Northumbria'a Dirge Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC ACAB DEDE FBGC EAEA GHGH

Dirge the sorrows by time made dimA
Seas are sullen in rain and mistB
Regret the woes that behind us swimA
Sullen's the north and grey the eastC
-
Black boats speck the horizon's rimA
The north is heavy and grey the eastC
They plash to shore in unison grimA
The breakers roar through rain and mistB
-
Ah the ravening Dane of oldD
Joys are born of time and sorrowE
He was beautiful cruel and boldD
Death yesterday is life to morrowE
-
The slain lie stark on bented moundsF
Winds are calling in rain and mistB
There's blood and smoke and wide red woundsG
And black boats make to north and eastC
-
Through murky weltering seas they rowE
Dirge the eyes their deeds made dimA
Wives at their conning smile and glowE
And hail them on the horizon's rimA
-
There's peace on low mounds and shallow dellsG
Yellow rag wort and sea reed greyH
And thrumming and booming of village bellsG
Dirge the lives of that faded dayH
