To Mr Brown On His Book Against T--- Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AAAA BCAADDEFGHIIJKJLMNN OOOAAPQ

Giddy wth fond ambition mad wth prideA
Apostate angells once ev'n heavn defi'deA
Avenging heavn its hottest bolts prepardA
And hell and thunder provd their sad rewardA
-
Yet foolish man by no example wonB
perverse in ill dare rashly venture onC
Wildly rebells calls reason to his aidA
And uses it on him who reason madeA
For crimes like this what vengeance is in storeD
What but the same wch heaven showrd down on fiends beforeD
What milder could wee hope wee should receiveE
But god is kindly willing to forgiveF
He usd his Justice then but mercy nowG
Was then wth thunder armd but now wth youH
He bid you rise truths champion opposeI
Wth their own arms wth reason his audacious foesI
You take ye lists in your gods defenceJ
Unravell all their specious argumentsK
Who lull their hearers with a show of senseJ
In artfull words their best objections placeL
and in fair terms their sly delusions dressM
this guilding you remove streight we seeN
What nothings all their demonstrations beN
-
Thus when a fiend upon their sabbats cheatsO
The witches he has made wth fancyd treatsO
The air condenses round to costly meatesO
But if a stranger who by chance has viewdA
their rites dares venture to be boldly goodA
No more the pleasing Phantome does remainP
But to its former air dissolves againQ
