Which thus I sing to make ye moderns wise | B |
Strong Neptune once with sage Minerva strove | C |
And rising Athens was the Victors prize | B |
By Neptune Plutus guardian Powr of gain | D |
By great Minerva Bright Apollo stood | E |
But Jove superiour Bad ye side obtain | D |
Which best contrivd to do ye nation good | E |
Then Neptune striking from the parted ground | F |
The Warlike horse came pawing on ye plain | D |
And as it tossd its main prancd around | F |
By this he crys Ile make the people reign | D |
The Goddess smiling gently bowd ye spear | G |
And rather thus they shall be blessd she said | H |
Then upwards shooting in ye Vernal air | I |
With loaded boughs ye fruitfull Olive spread | H |
Jove saw what gifts ye rival Powrs designd | H |
Then took th' impartial scales resolvd to show | J |
If greater bliss in warlike pomp we find | H |
Or in ye calm which peacefull times bestow | J |
On Neptunes part he placd victorious days | K |
Gay trophys won fame extending wide | H |
But plenty safety science arts ease | L |
Minerva's scale with greater weight supplyd | H |
Fierce warr devours whom gentle Peace woud save | M |
Sweet peace restores wt angry warr destroys | N |
Warr made for peace with that rewards ye brave | M |
While Peace its pleasures from it self enjoys | N |
Hence Vanquishd Neptune to ye Sea withdrew | O |
Hence Wise Minerva ruld Athenian lands | P |
Her Athens hence in arts honour grew | O |
And still her Olives deck pacifick hands | P |
From fables thus disclosd a Monarchs mind | H |
May form Just rules to chuse ye truly great | H |
And subjects wearyd with distresses find | H |
Whose kind endeavours most befriend a state | H |
Evn Britain here may learn to place her love | Q |
If Citys won her kingdomes wealth have cost | H |
If Anna's thoughts ye Patriot soules approve | A |
Whose cares restore yt wealth ye wars had lost | H |
But if we ask ye Moral to disclose | R |
Whom best Europa's patroness it calls | S |
Great Anna's title no exception knows | R |
And unapplyd in this ye fable falls | S |
With her no Neptune or Minerva vyes | S |
When ere she pleasd her troops to conquest flew | O |
When ere she pleases peaceful times arise | S |
She gave the horse gives ye Olive too | O |
