The Horse And The Olive: Or, War And Peace Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEDEFDFDGHIHJKJK LMNMOPOPQRQRMMMMSMAM TUTUUQUQWith Moral Tale let Ancient Wisdom move | A |
Which thus I sing to make the Moderns wise | B |
Strong Neptune once with sage Minerva strove | C |
And rising Athens was the Victor's Prize | B |
By Neptune Plutus Guardian Pow'r of Gain | D |
By Great Minerva Bright Apollo stood | E |
But Jove superior bad the Side obtain | D |
Which best contriv'd to do the Nation Good | E |
Then Neptune striking from the parted Ground | F |
The Warlike Horse came pawing on the Plain | D |
And as it toss'd its Mane and pranc'd around | F |
By this he cries I'll make the People Reign | D |
The Goddess smiling gently bow'd the Spear | G |
And rather thus they shall be bless'd she said | H |
Then upwards shooting in the Vernal Air | I |
With loaded Boughs the fruitful Olive spread | H |
Jove saw what Gifts the Rival Pow'rs design'd | J |
And took th' impartial Scales resolv'd to show | K |
If greater Bliss in Warlike Pomp we find | J |
Or in the Calm which Peaceful Times bestow | K |
On Neptune's part he plac'd Victorious Days | L |
Gay Trophies won and Fame extending wide | M |
But Plenty Safety Science Arts and Ease | N |
Minerva's Scale with greater Weight supply'd | M |
Fierce War devours whom gentle Peace wou'd save | O |
Sweet Peace restores what angry War destroys | P |
War made for Peace with that rewards the Brave | O |
While Peace its Pleasures from it self enjoys | P |
Hence vanquish'd Neptune to the Sea withdrew | Q |
Hence wise Minerva rul'd Athenian Lands | R |
Her Athens hence in Arts and Honour grew | Q |
And still her Olives deck pacifick Hands | R |
From Fables thus disclos'd a Monarch's Mind | M |
May form just Rules to chuse the Truly Great | M |
And Subjects weary'd with Distresses find | M |
Whose kind Endeavours most befriend the State | M |
Ev'n Britain here may learn to place her Love | S |
If Cities won her Kingdoms Wealth have cost | M |
If Anna's Thoughts the patriot souls approve | A |
Whose Cares restore that Wealth the Wars had lost | M |
But if we ask the Moral to disclose | T |
Whom best europa's Patroness it calls | U |
Great ANNA's Title no Exception knows | T |
And unapply'd in this the Fable falls | U |
With Her no Neptune or Minerva vyes | U |
Whene'er she pleas'd her Troops to Conquest flew | Q |
Whene'er she pleases Peaceful Times arise | U |
She gave the Horse and gives the Olive too | Q |
