Mother of plenty daughter of the skiesA
Sweet Peace the troubl'd world's desire ariseA
Around thy poet weave thy summer shadesB
Within my fancy spread thy flow'ry meadsC
Amongst thy train soft ease and pleasure bringD
And thus indulgent sooth me whilst I singD
-
Great Anna claims the song no brighter nameE
Adorns the list of never dying fameE
No fairer soul was ever form'd aboveF
None e'er was more the grateful nation's loveF
Nor lov'd the nation more I fly with speedG
To sing such lines as Bolingbroke may readH
On war dispers'd on faction trampled downI
On all the peaceful glories of the crownI
And if I fail in too confin'd a flightJ
May the kind world upon my labours writeJ
'So fell the lines which strove for endless fameE
'Yet fell attempting on the noblest themeK
-
Now twelve revolving years has Britain stoodL
With loss of wealth and vast expence of bloodM
Europa's Guardian still her gallant armsN
Secur'd Europa from impending harmsN
Fair honour full success and just applauseO
Pursu'd her marches and adorn'd her causeP
Whilst Gaul aspiring to erect a throneQ
O'er other empires trembled for her ownQ
Bemoan'd her cities won her armies slainR
And sunk the thought of universal reignR
-
When thus reduc'd the world's Invaders lieS
The fears which rack'd the nations justly dieS
Pow'r finds its balance giddy motions ceaseT
In both the scales and each inclines to peaceT
This fair occasion Providence preparesU
To answer pious Anna's hourly pray'rsU
Which still on warm Devotion's wings aroseU
And reaching Heav'n obtain'd the world's reposeU
-
Within the vast expansion of the skyS
Where Orbs of gold in fields of Azure lieS
A glorious palace shines whose silver rayV
Serenely flowing lights the milky wayV
The road of angels Here with speedy careW
The summon'd Guardians of the world repairW
When Britain's Angel on the message sentX
Speaks Anna's pray'rs and Heaven's supream intentX
That war's destructive arm shou'd humble GaulY
Spain's parted realms to diff'rent monarchs fallY
The grand alliance crown'd with glory ceaseU
And joyful Europe find the sweets of peaceU
He spoke the smiling hopes of man's reposeU
The joy that springs from certain hopes aroseU
Diffusive o'er the place complacent airsU
Sedately sweet were heard within the spheresU
And bowing all adore the sovereign mindZ
And fly to execute the work design'dZ
-
This done the Guardian on the wing repairsU
Where Anna sat revolving publick caresU
With deep concern of thought Unseen he stoodL
Presenting peaceful images of goodL
On Fancy's airy stage returning TradeA2
A sunk Exchequer fill'd an Army paidA2
The fields with men the men with plenty bless'dB2
The towns with riches and the world with restB2
Such pleasing objects on her bosom playV
And give the dawn of glory's golden dayV
When all her labours at their harvest shewnR
Shall in her subjects joy compleat her ownR
Then breaking silence 'tis enough she criesU
That war has rag'd to make the nations wiseU
Heav'n prospers armies whilst they fight to saveC2
And thirst of further fame destroys the braveC2
The vanquish'd Gauls are humbly pleas'd to liveD2
And but escap'd the chains they meant to giveE2
Now let the pow'rs be still'd and each possess'dB2
Of what secures the common safety bestB2
-
So spake the Queen then fill'd with warmth divineR
She call'd her Oxford to the grand designR
Her Oxford prudent in affairs of stateF2
Profoundly thoughtful manifestly greatF2
In ev'ry turn whose steddy temper steersU
Above the reach of gold or shock of fearsU
Whom no blind chance but merit understoodL
By frequent tryals pow'r of doing goodL
And will to execute advanc'd on highS
O soul created to deserve the skyS
And make the nation crown'd with glory seeU
How much it rais'd itself by raising theeU
Now let the schemes which labour in thy breastB2
The long Alliance bless with lasting restB2
Weigh all pretences with impartial lawsU
And fix the sep'rate Int'rests of the causeU
-
These toils the graceful Bolingbroke attendsU
A Genius fashion'd for the greatest endsU
Whose strong perception takes the swiftest flightJ
And yet its swiftness ne'er obscures its sightJ
When schemes are fix'd and each assign'd a partG2
None serves his country with a nobler heartG2
Just thoughts of honour all his mind controulV
And Expedition wings his lively soulV
On such a Patriot to confer the TrustH2
The Monarch knows it safe as well as justH2
-
Then next proceeding in her Agents choiceU
And ever pleas'd that worth obtain the voiceU
She from the list of high distinguish'd famesU
With pious Bristow gallant Strafford namesU
One form'd to stand a church's firm supportI2
The other fitted to adorn a courtI2
Both vers'd in business both of fine addressU
By which experience leads to great successU
And both to distant lands the Monarch sendsU
And to their conduct Europe's peace commendsU
-
Now ships unmoor'd to waft her Agents o'erJ2
Spread all their sail and quit the flying shoreK2
The foreign Agents reach th' appointed placeU
The Congress opens and it will be peaceU
Methinks the war like stormy winter fliesU
When fairer months unveil the blueish skiesU
A flow'ry world the sweetest season spreadsU
And doves with branches flutter round their headsU
-
Half peopled Gaul whom num'rous ills destroyL2
With wishful heart attends the promis'd joyL2
For this prepares the Duke ah sadly slainR
'Tis grief to name him whom we mourn in vainR
No warmth of verse repairs the vital flameE
For verse can only grant a life in fameE
Yet cou'd my praise like spicy odours shedH
In everlasting song embalm the deadH
To realms that weeping heard the loss I'd tellV
What courage sense and faith with Brandon fellV
-
But Britain more than one for glory breedsU
And polish'd Talbot to the charge succeedsU
Whose far projecting thoughts maturely clearM2
Like glasses draw their distant objects nearM2
Good Parts by gentle breeding much refin'dZ
And stores of learning grace his ample mindZ
A cautious virtue regulates his waysU
And Honour gilds them with a thousand raysU
To serve his nation at his Queen's commandN2
He parts commission'd for the Gallick landN2
With pleasure Gaul beholds him on her shoreK2
And learns to love a name she fear'd beforeK2
-
Once more aloft there meet for new debatesU
The Guardian Angels of Europa's statesU
And mutual concord shines in ev'ry faceU
And ev'ry bosom glows with hopes of peaceU
While Britain's steps in one consent they praiseU
Then gravely mourn their other realms delaysU
Their doubtful claims through seas of blood pursu'dO2
Their fears that Gallia fell but half subdu'dO2
And all the reas'nings which attempt to shewP2
That war shou'd ravage in the world belowV
'Ah fall'n estate of man can rage delightJ
'Wounds please the touch or ruin charm the sightJ
'Ambition make unlovely mischief fairW
'Or ever Pride be Providence's careW
'When stern Oppressors range the bloody fieldQ2
''Tis just to conquer and unsafe to yieldQ2
'There save the nations but no more pursueP2
'Nor in thy turn become Oppressor too '-
Our rebel angels for Ambition fellV
And war in Heav'n produc'd a Fiend in hellV
Thus with a soft concern for man's reposeU
The tender Guardians join to moan our woesU
Then awful rise combin'd with all their mightJ
To find what Fury 'scap'd the den of nightJ
The pleasing labours of their love withstandsU
And spreads a wild distraction o'er the landsU
Their glitt'ring pinnions sound in yielding airW
And watchful Providence approves the careW
-
In Flandria's soil where Camps have mark'd the plainR
The Fiend impetuous Discord fix'd her reignR
A tent her royal seat With full resortI2
Stern shapes of Horrour throng'd her buisy courtI2
Blind Mischief Ambush close concealing IreR2
Loud Threat'nings Ruin arm'd with sword and fireJ2
Assaulting Fierceness Anger wanting breathS2
High Red'ning Rage and Various Forms of deathS2
Dire Imps of darkness whom with Gore she feedsU
When war beyond its point of Good proceedsU
In Gallick armour call'd with alter'd nameE
Great love of Empire to the field she cameE
Now still supporting Feud she strives to hidT2
