Grant heav'n that I may chuse my blissB
If you design me worldly HappinessC
Tis not Honour thats but airD
Glory has but fancied lightE
Fame as oft speak's false as rightE
Riches have wings ever dwell with careD
Give me an undistemperd mindF
As ye third region undisturbd by windF
Content from passions ever freeG
to rule ones selfs indeed a monarchyG
this I request of theeG
-
Tho all we see are fortunes apesH
change as oft as she their shapesH
Tho my kinder fortune leave meG
Tho my dearest friends deceive meG
I in this universall tideI
firm on heav'ns mercy would abideI
'mongst ye giddy waves securely rideI
Tho they should dieJ
Who never did my love abuseK
Perhaps in tears I would my passion ventL
But straight again I'de be contentL
Remembring 'twas th' almighty's deed tho IJ
should my best relations looseK
Ide sighing cry Heav'ns will be doneM
It did but lend them now it has its ownN
Fortune should never beG
Adored as a deity by meG
She onely makes them fooles who make her greatO
But still content on earth intent on heav'n I'de beG
an equall temper keep in ev'ry stateO
nor Care nor fear my destinyG
Death when most dreadfull should not frightE
Wn ere he comes Ide patiently submittE
Content thus in my soul should build its halcyons nestE
As did thy spirit on ye waters restE
keep an everlasting calm with in my breastE
