Now early Shepherds o'er the Meadow passA
And print long Foot steps in the glittering GrassA
The Cows neglectful of their Pasture standB
By turns obsequious to the Milker's HandB
-
When Damon softly trod the shaven LawnC
Damon a Youth from City Cares withdrawnC
Long was the pleasing Walk he wander'd thro'D
A cover'd Arbour clos'd the distant viewE
There rests the Youth and while the feather'd ThrongF
Raise their wild Musick thus contrives a SongF
-
Here wafted o'er by mild Etesian AirD
Thou Country Goddess beauteous Health repairD
Here let my Breast thro' quiv'ring Trees inhaleG
Thy rosy Blessings with the Morning GaleG
What are the Fields or Flow'rs or all I seeH
Ah tastless all if not enjoy'd with theeH
-
Joy to my Soul I feel the Goddess nighI
The Face of Nature cheers as well as II
O'er the flat Green refreshing Breezes runJ
The smiling Dazies blow beneath the SunJ
The Brooks run purling down with silver WavesK
The planted Lanes rejoice with dancing LeavesL
The chirping Birds from all the Compass roveM
To tempt the tuneful Echoes of the GroveM
High sunny Summits deeply shaded DalesN
Thick Mossy Banks and flow'ry winding ValesN
With various Prospect gratify the SightO
And scatter fix'd Attention in DelightO
-
Come Country Goddess come nor thou sufficeP
But bring thy Mountain Sister ExerciseQ
Call'd by thy lively Voice she turns her PaceR
Her winding Horn proclaims the finish'd ChaceR
She mounts the Rocks she skims the level PlainS
Dogs Hawks and Horses crowd her early TrainS
Her hardy Face repels the tanning WindT
And Lines and Meshes loosely float behindT
All these as Means of Toil the Feeble seeH
But these are helps to Pleasure join'd with theeH
-
Let Sloth lye softning 'till high Noon in DownU
Or lolling fan her in the sult'ry TownU
Unnerv'd with Rest and turn her own DiseaseV
Or foster others in luxurious EaseV
I mount the Courser call the deep mouth'd HoundsW
The Fox unkennell'd flies to covert GroundsW
I lead where Stags thro' tangled Thickets treadX
And shake the Saplings with their branching HeadX
I make the Faulcons wing their airy WayY
And soar to seize or stooping strike their PreyY
To snare the Fish I fix the luring BaitZ
To wound the Fowl I load the Gun with FateZ
'Tis thus thro' change of Exercise I rangeA2
And Strength and Pleasure rise from ev'ry ChangeA2
Here beautious Health for all the Year remainS
When the next comes I'll charm thee thus againB2
-
Oh come thou Goddess of my rural SongF
And bring thy Daughter calm Content alongF
Dame of the ruddy Cheek and laughing EyeI
From whose bright Presence Clouds of Sorrow flyI
For her I mow my Walks I platt my Bow'rsW
Clip my low Hedges and support my Flow'rsW
To welcome her this Summer Seat I drestZ
And here I court her when she comes to RestZ
When she from Exercise to learned EaseW
Shall change again and teach the Change to pleaseW
-
Now Friends conversing my soft Hours refineC2
And Tully's Tusculum revives in mineC2
Now to grave Books I bid the Mind retreatZ
And such as make me rather Good than GreatZ
Or o'er the Works of easy Fancy roveM
Where Flutes and Innocence amuse the GroveM
The native Bard that on Sicilian PlainsW
First sung the lowly Manners of the SwainsW
Or Maro's Muse that in the fairest LightZ
Paints rural Prospects and the Charms of SightZ
These soft Amusements bring Content alongF
And Fancy void of Sorrow turns to SongF
Here beauteous Health for all the Year remainS
When the next comes I'll charm thee thus againB2
