Time Sire of years unwind thy leaf anewA
still the past recall to present viewA
Spread forth its circles swiftly gaze ym oreB
But where an action's nobly sung beforeB
There stop stay for me whose thoughts designC
To make anothers song resound in mineC
Pass where ye priests procession bore the lawD
When Jourdans parted waters fixd with aweE
While Israel marchd upon ye naked SandF
Admird ye wonder obtaind the landF
Slide through the num'rous fates of Canaans kingsG
While conquest rode on Expeditions wingsG
Glance over Israel at a single viewA
In bondage oft oft unbound anewA
Till Jabin rise Deborah stand enrolldF
On the broad guilded leafs revolving foldF
-
O King subdu'd O Woman born to fameH
O Wake my fancy for the glorious themeI
O wake my fancy with the sense of praiseJ
O wake with warblings of triumphant laysJ
The Land you rise in sultry suns invadeF
But where you rise to sing you'le find a shadeF
-
Those trees in order with verdure crowndF
The Sacred Prophetesses tent surroundF
that fair palm afront exactly plactF
That overtops overspreads the restF
Near ye broad root a mossy bank supportsK
Where Justice opens unexpensive courtsK
There Deb'rah sits the willing tribes repairL
Referr their causes she Judges thereL
Nor needs a guard to bring her subjects inM
Each Grace each Virtue proves a guard unseenN
Nor wants the penaltys enforcing lawD
While Great Opinion gives effectuall aweE
-
Now twenty years that rolld in heavy painO
Saw Jabin gall them with Oppressions chainO
When she submissive to divine commandF
Proclaims a warr for freedome o're ye landF
bids young Barack with those men descendF
Whom in the mountains he for battle traindF
Go says the Prophetess thy foes assailP
Go make ten thousand over all prevailP
Make Jabins captains feel thy glittering swordF
Make all his army God has spoke the wordF
He fitt for warr Israels hope in sightF
Yet doubts ye number by that the fightF
Then thus replys with wish to stand secureQ
Or eager thought to know the conquest sureQ
Belovd of God lend thou thy presence tooF
I with gladness lead th' appointed fewF
But if thou wil't not lett thy son denyR
For whats ten thousand men or what am IR
If so she crys a share of toil be mineC
Another share some dishonour thineC
For God to punish doubt resolves to showS
That less than numbers can suppress his foeS
You'le move to conquer the foes to yieldF
But 'tis a womans act assures the fieldF
-
Now seem the warriours in their ranks assigndF
Now furling banners flutter in the windF
Her words encourage his actions leadF
Hope spurrs them forward valour draws ye bladeF
Freedome like a fair reward for allT
Stands reaching forth her hand seems to callT
-
On T'other side allmost ore ye plainO
Proud Sis'ra Jabins captain brings his menU
As thick as locusts on the vintage flyR
As thick as scatterd leaves in Autumn lyR
Bold with success against a nation trydF
proud of numbers secure in prideF
-
Now sound the trumpets now my fancy warmsV
now methinks I view their toiles in armsW
The lively Phantomes tread my boundless mindF
With no faint colours or weak strokes designdF
See where in distant conflict from afarrQ
The pointed arrows bring the wounds of warrQ
See where the lines with closer force engageX
thrust the spear whirl ye sword of rageX
Here break the files vainly strive to closeY
There on their own repelld assist their foesZ
Here Deb'rah calls Jabins souldiers flyR
There Barack fights Jabins souldiers dyF
But now nine hundred chariots roll alongA2
Expert their guiders their horses strongA2
Terrour rattling in their fierce arrayQ
Bears down on Israel to restore the dayQ
O Lord of battles O the dangers nearQ
Assist thine Israel or they perish hereQ
How swift is Mercys aid behold it flyR
On rushing tempests through ye troubled skyR
With dashing rain with pelting hail they blowS
sharply drive them on the facing foeS
Thus blessd with help onely touchd behindF
The fav'rite Nation presses in the windF
But heat of action now disturbs ye sightF
wild confusion mingles all ye fightF
Cold whistling winds shriekes of dying menU
groans armour sound in all ye plainO
The bands of Canaan fate no longer dareQ
Oppressd by weather destroyd by warrQ
from his chariot whence he ruld ye fightF
Their haughty Leader leaps to Joyn ye flightF
See where he flys see the Victour nearQ
See rapid Conquest in pursuit of FearQ
See See they both make off ye work is oreQ
fancy cleard of vision as beforeQ
-
Thus if ye mind of man may seem to moveB2
With some resemblance of ye skyes aboveC2
When warrs are gath'ring in our hearts belowS
We've seen their battles in theriall showS
The Long distended tracts of opening skyR
The Phantoms Azure field of fight supplyR
The whitish clouds an argent armour yieldF
A radiant blazon guilds their argent shieldF
Young glittring comets point ye leveld spearQ
Which for the pennons hang their flaming hairQ
ore their helms for gallant glory dresstF
Sit curles of air nod upon the crestF
Thus armd they seem to march seem to fightF
seeming wounds deaths delude ye sightF
The ruddy thunder clouds look staind with goreQ
for ye din of warr within they roarQ
Then flys a side then a side pursuesD2
Till in the motion all their shapes they looseE2
Dispersing air concludes ye mimick sceneN
The sky shuts up swiftly clears againU
-
But does their Sis'ra share ye common fateF
Or mourn his humbled pride in dark retreatF
With such enquiry near the palm repairQ
Victorious Honour knows tells it thereQ
-
To that fair type of Israels late successF2
Which nobly rises as its weights depressF2
To that fair type returns ye Joyfull bandF
Whose courage rose to free their groaning landF
There stands ye Leader in the pomp of armsW
There stands the Judge in beautys awfull charmsW
whilst reclind upon the resting spearQ
He pants with chace breaths in calmer airQ
Her thoughts are working with a backward viewF
woud in song the great exploit renewF
-
She sees an armd Oppressions hundred handsG2
impose its fetters on the promisd landsG2
She sees her nation struggling in the chainsH2
warrs arising with unequall trainsH2
She sees their feats in arms the field embru'dF
The foe disorderd the foe pursudF
Till Conquest dressd in rays of Glory comeI2
With Peace Freedome brought in triumph homeJ2
Then round her heart a beamy gladness playsJ
Which darting forward thus converts to praiseJ
-
For Israels late avengings on ye foeS
When led by no compelling powr belowS
When each sprung forward of their own accordF
For this for all the mercy praise the LordF
-
Hear O ye Kings ye neighbring Princes hearQ
My song triumphant shall instruct your fearQ
My song triumphant bids your glory bowK2
To God confessd the God of Jacob nowK2
-
O Glorious Lord when with thy sov'raign handF
Thou led thy nation off from Edoms LandF
Then trembled Earth shook ye Heav'ns on highR
clouds in drops forsook ye melted skyR
With tumbling waters hills were heard to roarQ
felt such shocks as Sinai felt beforeQ
-
But fear abating which by time decaysJ
The Kings of Canaan rose in Shamgars daysJ
still continud into Jaels timesL2
Their empire fixing with succesfull crimesL2
Oppression ravagd all our lost abodesL2
Nor durst ye people trust ye common roadsL2
But paths perplexd unfrequented choseL2
To shun the dangers of insulting foesL2
Thus direfull wast deformd ye country roundF
Unpeopled towns disimprovd the groundF
Till I resolving in the gap to standF
I Deb'rah rose a Mother of the LandF
Where others slaves by settled custome grownM2
Coud serve chuse to serve the Gods unknownM2
Where others sufferd with a tame regrettF
Destruction spilling blood in ev'ry gateF
fourty thousand had not for the fieldF
One spear offensive or defensive shieldF
-
O towrds ye Leaders of my nation moveB2
O beat mN2
