Happy the man whose firm resolves obtainA
Assisting Grace to burst his sinfull chainA
For him the Days with golden minutes glowB
Tis his the Land where milk hony flowB
Justice mercy piety peaceC
Attend his workes crown them with successD
He hopes the best that is for heavn prepardE
wants no bliss while virtue can rewardE
That purpled hour which ushers in the lightE
that which shuts its beautys up in nightE
Still hears him pray still sees his actions rightE
For him they still on easy minutes speedE
as they move for him the rest succeedE
-
But most Alas by vain opinion leadE
Ore the wild maze of erring passions treadE
now to this now to that we goB
each desire neither rightly knowB
act irresolute in all we doE
seldom stay to search our objects throughE
Desire is vain wanton free to rangeF
Fond of a Chace fond the Chace to ChangeF
By turns a thousand inclinations riseG
each by turns as impotently diesG
Now thought grows wild if loose Aminta's kindE
Shee spreads her Charms captivates the mindE
Anon Aminta leaves the thought at easeH
No more her aires soft Allurements pleaseH
We love reclining in ye shady bowersI
by running waters near sweet banks of flowrsI
To surfeit nature with full bowles of wineJ
with forcd appetites on bliss refineJ
Then buisy then fantastically wiseI
Then to be some thing else we streight deviseI
For Fancy still undreind affors supplysI
tis thus if reason from the throne be gonJ
The madd affections bear their master onJ
His life proves restless his labour vainJ
By hurrying after Phantomes of the brainJ
So the brave Falcon when its glorys fadeE
When its strong wings their generous forces shedE
The vacant holds ignobler birds supplyK
With Ravens feathers impd she mounts on highK
weak or giddy strayes along the skyK
-
In Every Change indeed resolves we makeL
But those resolves to settle newer breakL
By contradictions thus we seem to liveM
Nor want the colour of a cause to giveN
Kind heav'n forgive us when for what we doE
We woud debauch our knack of reasning tooE
When int'rest does on thought its force dispenceI
When pleasure beats upon the dazzled senceI
Our resolutions oft in vain are madeE
Kind heavn forgive the fault lend thine aidE
If by thy law we must temptations findE
If these must try the temper of the mindE
We begg thee not to change thy good decreeO
We begg for pardon or support from theeO
Our wisdome never shoud thy ways confineJ
but thus confess humbly rest in thineJ
Tis well theres tryalls since the mans so proudE
since he's weak tis well theres Grace allowdE
