As Bacchus ranging at his leisureA
Io Bacchus king of pleasureA
Charm'd the wide world with drink and dancesB
And all his thousand airy fanciesC
Alas he quite forgot the whileD
His fav'rite vines in Lesbos isleD
-
The God returning ere they diedE
Ah see my jolly Fawns he criedE
The leaves but hardly born are redF
And the bare arms for pity spreadF
The beasts afford a rich manureG
Fly my boys and bring the cureG
Up the mountains down the valesH
Thro' the woods and o'er the dalesH
For this if full the clusters growI
Your bowls shall doubly overflowI
-
So chear'd with more officious hasteJ
They bring the dung of ev'ry beastK
The loads they wheel the roots they bareL
They lay the rich manure with careL
While oft he calls to labour hardM
And names as oft the red rewardN
-
The plants revive new leaves appearO
The thick'ning clusters load the yearO
The season swiftly purple grewP
The grapes hung dangling deep with blueP
-
A vineyard ripe a day sereneQ
Now calls them all to work againR
The Fawns thro' ev'ry furrow shootS
To load their flaskets with the fruitS
And now the vintage early trodT
The wines invite the jovial GodT
-
Strow the roses raise the songU
See the master comes alongU
Lusty Revel join'd with LaughterA
Whim and Frolic follow afterA
The Fawns beside the vatts remainV
To shew the work and reap the gainV
-
All around and all aroundW
They sit to riot on the groundW
A vessel stands amidst the ringX
And here they laugh and there they singX
Or rise a jolly jolly bandY
And dance about it hand in handY
Dance about and shout amainV
Then sit to laugh and sing againV
-
But as an antient author sungZ
The vine manur'd with ev'ry dungZ
From ev'ry creature strangely drewP
A tang of brutal nature tooP
'Twas hence in drinking on the lawnsA2
New turns of humour seiz'd the FawnsA2
-
Here one was crying out by JoveB2
Another fight me in the groveB2
This wounds a friend and that the treesA2
The Lion's temper reign'd in theseA2
-
Another grins and leaps aboutC2
And keeps a merry world of routC2
And talks impertinently freeD2
And twenty talk the same as heD2
Chatt'ring airy idle kindE2
These take the Monkey turn of mindE2
-
Here one who saw the nymphs that stoodF2
To peep upon them from the woodF2
Steals off to try if any maidG2
Be lagging late beneath the shadeG2
While loose discourse another raisesA2
In naked Nature's plainest phrasesA2
And ev'ry glass he drinks enjoysA2
With change of nonsense lust and noiseA2
Mad and careless hot and vainV
Such as these the Goat retainV
-
Another drinks and casts it upH2
And drinks and wants another cupH2
Solemn silent and sedateI2
Ever long and ever lateI2
Full of meats and full of wineV
This takes his temper from the swineV
-
Here some who hardly seem to breatheJ2
Drink and hang the jaw beneathK2
Gaping tender apt to weepL2
Their natures alter'd by the sheepL2
-
'Twas thus one autumn all the crewP
If what the Poets sing be trueP
While Bacchus made the merry feastK
Inclin'd to one or other beastK
And since 'tis said for many a mileD
He spread the vines of Lesbos isleD
