When Spring came on with fresh DelightA
To cheer the Soul and charm the SightA
While easy Breezes softer RainB
And warmer Suns salute the PlainB
'Twas then in yonder Piny GroveC
That Nature went to meet with LoveD
-
Green was her Robe and green her WreathE
Where e'er she trod 'twas green beneathE
Where e'er she turn'd the Pulses beatF
With new recruits of Genial HeatF
And in her Train the Birds appearG
To match for all the coming YearG
-
Rais'd on a Bank where Daizys grewH
And Vi'lets intermix'd a BlewH
She finds the Boy she went to findI
A thousand Pleasures wait behindI
Aside a thousand Arrows lyeJ
But all unfeather'd wait to flyJ
-
When they met the Dame and BoyK
Dancing Graces idle JoyK
Wanton Smiles and airy PlayL
Conspir'd to make the Scene be gayL
Love pair'd the Birds through all the GroveC
And Nature bid them sing to LoveD
Sitting hopping flutt'ring singM
And pay their Tribute from the WingM
To fledge the Shafts that idly lyeJ
And yet unfeather'd wait to flyJ
-
'Tis thus when Spring renews the BloodN
They meet in ev'ry trembling WoodO
And thrice they make the Plumes agreeP
And ev'ry Dart they mount with threeP
And ev'ry Dart can boast a KindI
Which suits each proper turn of MindI
-
From the tow'ring Eagle's PlumeQ
The Gen'rous Hearts accept their DoomQ
Shot by the Peacock's painted EyeJ
The vain and airy Lovers dyeJ
For careful Dames and frugal MenR
The Shafts are speckled by the HenR
The Pyes and Parrots deck the DartsS
When Prattling wins the panting HeartsS
When from the Voice the Passions springM
The warbling Finch affords a WingM
Together by the Sparrow stungT
Down fall the wanton and the youngT
And fledg'd by Geese the Weapons flyJ
When others love they know not whyJ
-
All this as late I chanc'd to roveC
I learn'd in yonder waving GroveC
And see says Love who call'd me nearG
How much I deal with Nature hereU
How both support a proper PartV
She gives the Feather I the DartV
Then cease for Souls averse to sighJ
If Nature cross ye so do IJ
My Weapon there unfeather'd fliesW
And shakes and shuffles through the SkiesW
But if the mutual Charms I findI
By which she links you Mind to MindI
They wing my Shafts I poize the DartsS
And strike from both through both your HeartsS
