Gay Bacchus liking Estcourt's WineA
A noble Meal bespokeB
And for the Guests that were to DineA
Brought Comus Love and JokeB
The God near Cupid drew his ChairC
And Joke near Comus plac'dD
Thus Wine makes Love forget its CareC
And Mirth exalts a FeastE
The more to please the sprightly GodF
Each sweet engaging GraceG
Put on some Cloaths to come abroadH
And took a Waiters PlaceG
Then Cupid nam'd at every GlassI
A Lady of the SkyB
While Bacchus swore he'd Drink the LassI
And had it Bumper highB
Fat Comus tost his Brimmers o'reJ
And always got the mostK
For Joke took care to fill him moreL
When e'er he mist the ToastK
They call'd and drank at every TouchM
Then fill'd and drank againN
And if the Gods can take too muchM
'Tis said they did so thenN
Free Jests run all the Table roundO
And with the Wine conspireP
While they by sly Reflection woundO
To set their Heads on FireP
Gay Bacchus little Cupid stungB
By reck'ning his DeceitsQ
And Cupid mock'd his stammering TongueB
With all his staggering GaitsQ
Joke droll'd on Comus' greedy WaysQ
And Tales without a JestR
While Comus call'd his witty PlaysQ
But Waggeries at BestR
Such Talk soon set 'em all at OddsQ
And had I Homer's PenN
I'd sing ye how they drunk like GodsQ
And how they fought like MenN
To part the Fray the Graces flyB
Who make 'em soon agreeS
And had the Furies selves been nighB
They still were Three to ThreeS
Bacchus appeas'd rais'd Cupid upT
And gave him back his BowU
But kept some Darts to stir the CupT
Where Sack and Sugar flowV
Joke taking Comus' rosie CrownW
In Triumph wore the PrizeQ
And thrice in Mirth he pusht him downW
As thrice he strove to riseQ
Then Cupid sought the Myrtle GroveX
Where Venus did reclineA
And Beauty close embracing LoveY
They join'd to Rail at WineA
And Comus loudly cursing WitZ
Roll'd off to some RetreatA2
Where boon Companions gravely sitZ
In fat unweildy StateB2
Bacchus and Joke who stay behindC2
For one fresh Glass prepareC
They Kiss and are exceeding kindC2
And Vow to be sincereD2
But part in Time whoever hearE2
This our Instructive SongB
For tho' such Friendships may be dearD2
They can't continue longB
