Lovely lasting peace of mindA
Sweet delight of human kindA
Heavenly born and bred on highB
To crown the fav'rites of the skyB
With more of happiness belowC
Than victors in a triumph knowC
Whither O whither art thou fledD
To lay thy meek contented headD
What happy region dost thou pleaseE
To make the seat of calms and easeE
-
Ambition searches all its sphereF
Of pomp and state to meet thee thereG
Increasing Avarice would findA
Thy presence in its gold enshrin'dA
The bold advent'rer ploughs his wayH
Through rocks amidst the foaming seaI
To gain thy love and then perceivesJ
Thou wert not in the rocks and wavesK
The silent heart which grief assailsL
Treads soft and lonesome o'er the valesL
Sees daisies open rivers runM
And seeks as I have vainly doneM
Amusing thought but learns to knowC
That solitude's the nurse of woeC
No real happiness is foundN
In trailing purple o'er the groundN
Or in a soul exalted highB
To range the circuit of the skyB
Converse with stars above and knowC
All nature in its forms belowC
The rest it seeks in seeking diesO
And doubts at last for knowledge riseO
-
Lovely lasting peace appearF
This world itself if thou art hereP
Is once again with Eden blestQ
And man contains it in his breastQ
-
'Twas thus as under shade I stoodR
I sung my wishes to the woodR
And lost in thought no more perceiv'dS
The branches whisper as they wav'dT
It seem'd as all the quiet placeU
Confess'd the presence of the GraceU
When thus she spoke 'Go rule thy willV
Bid thy wild passions all be stillV
Know God and bring thy heart to knowC
The joys which from religion flowC
Then ev'ry Grace shall prove its guestQ
And I'll be there to crown the rest '-
-
Oh by yonder mossy seatW
In my hours of sweet retreatW
Might I thus my soul employX
With sense of gratitude and joyX
Rais'd as ancient prophets wereY
In heavenly vision praise and pray'rZ
Pleasing all men hurting noneM
Pleas'd and bless'd with God aloneA2
Then while the gardens take my sightB2
With all the colours of delightB2
While silver waters glide alongC2
To please my ear and court my songC2
I'll lift my voice and tune my stringD2
And thee great source of nature singD2
-
The sun that walks his airy wayH
To light the world and give the dayH
The moon that shines with borrow'd lightB2
The stars that gild the gloomy nightB2
The seas that roll unnumber'd wavesK
The wood that spreads its shady leavesJ
The field whose ears conceal the grainE2
The yellow treasure of the plainE2
All of these and all I seeI
Should be sung and sung by meI
They speak their maker as they canF2
But want and ask the tongue of manF2
-
Go search among your idle dreamsG2
Your busy or your vain extremesG2
And find a life of equal blissH2
Or own the next begun in thisH2
