Just when ye dead of night began to failA
boding visions senceless dreams expellA
Methought a matron stood beside my bedB
Upon her face a wondrous sweetness playdB
pointed Glorys dressd the modest visions headB
my tongue grew speechless my eyes were fixtB
by silent fear with admiration mixtB
She to my lips a living coal apply'sC
perhaps from some well pleasing sacrificeC
then thus she said while I more courage foundB
to bear her sight hear ye heav'nly soundB
from the bright realms my vot'ries have I cameD
saints are my vot'ries Piety my nameD
Oft do I come but often am dispisdB
happy were all if all my favour prizdB
now my best offers to yr soul I giveE
Accept these offers O be mine liveF
Ile teach you how to pray for wt you wantB
when I teach you God yr prayr will grantB
Ile teach you your redeemer to rehearseC
glide in flames of love along yr verseC
Lett other men describe wth flowing linesC
How Damon courts or Amarillis shinesC
But for your subject chuse a theme divineG
fames their reward while heaven it self is thineG
then since Angells sing of nought belowA
they'le sing like men but like an angell youH
Be thou my bard as these words she saidB
She powrd a sacred unction on my headB
then thus proceeded Be thy muse thy ZealA
dare to be good all my Joys revealA
if Drunkards to their Deity applyA
A short contentment a fleeting JoyI
Apply to me true peace lasting blissC
I should not dress in weaker charms yn hisC
New paint ye love yt hov'ring over bedsC
from purple wings his guilty pleasures shedsC
his bow be sable sable be the dartsC
but tingd with endless flame to scorch our heartsC
his bones without the sanguin stream or vital partsC
But above all employ thy utmost powrJ
on love Divine twill need it all moreJ
Oh boundless Goodness to poor mankind shownK
tell but the fact lett rhetorick aloneK
no colours can become it like its ownK
Draw a Descending Jesus from ye skyA
Make the great being in a manger lyA
Of men despisd of men he came to saveL
pursu'd afflicted to ye very graveL
Make ye great being cheerfully submittB
me like Mary weeping at his feetB
Much have I said more woud tell you yetB
but raptures smother what I woud repeatB
My thoughts grow giddy while I strive to soundB
the height depth of love wthout a boundB
My God I cannot comprehend thy wayesC
but what I cannot comprehend Ile prayseC
-
then With raptures in her mouth she fledB
the Cloud for on a cloud she seemd to treadB
its curles unfolded around her spreadB
My downy rest the warmth of fancy brokeM
when my thoughts grew settled thus I spokeM
-
Ah Gracious Lord make all my dreams like thisC
make mine innocence compose my blissC
When reason lyes Asleep leaves to reignN
May my good Angell my passions restrainN
Or I must wake to find upon my breastB
the gaudy forms more deep yn ere imprestB
they'le make my reason's victorys in vainN
make my former habits mine againO
Thus if the snake wch hardly moves the tailA
to shun the conqu'ring season takes a cellA
if nature in a sleep a skin prepareJ
give him more strength make him look more fairJ
He finds his robe is changd fm what he woreJ
He proudly shoots along ye sunny shoreJ
hunts the man fm whom he fled beforeJ
