Young Jessica Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD EFEFGFGF HIHICFCF

Young Jessica sat all the dayA
With heart o'er idle love thoughts piningB
Her needle bright beside her layA
So active once now idly shiningB
Ah Jessy 'tis in idle heartsC
That love and mischief are most nimbleD
The safest shield against the dartsC
Of Cupid is Minerva's thimbleD
-
The child who with a magnet playsE
Well knowing all its arts so wilyF
The tempter near a needle laysE
And laughing says We'll steal it slilyF
The needle having naught to doG
Is pleased to let the magnet wheedleF
Till closer closer come the twoG
And off at length elopes the needleF
-
Now had this needle turned its eyeH
To some gay reticule's constructionI
It ne'er had strayed from duty's tieH
Nor felt the magnet's sly seductionI
Thus girls would you keep quiet heartsC
Your snowy fingers must be nimbleF
The safest shield against the dartsC
Of Cupid is Minerva's thimbleF
