To The Flying-fish.[1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEFGG BBHIJKLL MMAANNOOPPQQWhen I have seen thy snow white wing | A |
From the blue wave at evening spring | A |
And show those scales of silvery white | B |
So gayly to the eye of light | B |
As if thy frame were formed to rise | C |
And live amid the glorious skies | C |
Oh it has made me proudly feel | D |
How like thy wing's impatient zeal | D |
Is the pure soul that rests not pent | E |
Within this world's gross element | F |
But takes the wing that God has given | G |
And rises into light and heaven | G |
- | |
But when I see that wing so bright | B |
Grow languid with a moment's flight | B |
Attempt the paths of air in vain | H |
And sink into the waves again | I |
Alas the flattering pride is o'er | J |
Like thee awhile the soul may soar | K |
But erring man must blush to think | L |
Like thee again the soul may sink | L |
- | |
Oh Virtue when thy clime I seek | M |
Let not my spirit's flight be weak | M |
Let me not like this feeble thing | A |
With brine still dropping from its wing | A |
Just sparkle in the solar glow | N |
And plunge again to depths below | N |
But when I leave the grosser throng | O |
With whom my soul hath dwelt so long | O |
Let me in that aspiring day | P |
Cast every lingering stain away | P |
And panting for thy purer air | Q |
Fly up at once and fix me there | Q |
