To The Flying-fish.[1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEFGG BBHIJKLL MMAANNOOPPQQ

When I have seen thy snow white wingA
From the blue wave at evening springA
And show those scales of silvery whiteB
So gayly to the eye of lightB
As if thy frame were formed to riseC
And live amid the glorious skiesC
Oh it has made me proudly feelD
How like thy wing's impatient zealD
Is the pure soul that rests not pentE
Within this world's gross elementF
But takes the wing that God has givenG
And rises into light and heavenG
-
But when I see that wing so brightB
Grow languid with a moment's flightB
Attempt the paths of air in vainH
And sink into the waves againI
Alas the flattering pride is o'erJ
Like thee awhile the soul may soarK
But erring man must blush to thinkL
Like thee again the soul may sinkL
-
Oh Virtue when thy clime I seekM
Let not my spirit's flight be weakM
Let me not like this feeble thingA
With brine still dropping from its wingA
Just sparkle in the solar glowN
And plunge again to depths belowN
But when I leave the grosser throngO
With whom my soul hath dwelt so longO
Let me in that aspiring dayP
Cast every lingering stain awayP
And panting for thy purer airQ
Fly up at once and fix me thereQ
