To The Book Of Follies Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: A BBCCDEFFGGHHIIJJKKLL MMNNOKKKDDWRITTEN IN A COMMONPLACE BOOK CALLED THE BOOK OF FOLLIES IN WHICH EVERY ONE THAT OPENED IT WAS TO CONTRIBUTE SOMETHING | A |
- | |
- | |
This tribute's from a wretched elf | B |
Who hails thee emblem of himself | B |
The book of life which I have traced | C |
Has been like thee a motley waste | C |
Of follies scribbled o'er and o'er | D |
One folly bringing hundreds more | E |
Some have indeed been writ so neat | F |
In characters so fair so sweet | F |
That those who judge not too severely | G |
Have said they loved such follies dearly | G |
Yet still O book the allusion stands | H |
For these were penned by female hands | H |
The rest alas I own the truth | I |
Have all been scribbled so uncouth | I |
That Prudence with a withering look | J |
Disdainful flings away the book | J |
Like thine its pages here and there | K |
Have oft been stained with blots of care | K |
And sometimes hours of peace I own | L |
Upon some fairer leaves have shone | L |
White as the snowings of that heaven | M |
By which those hours of peace were given | M |
But now no longer such oh such | N |
The blast of Disappointment's touch | N |
No longer now those hours appear | O |
Each leaf is sullied by a tear | K |
Blank blank is every page with care | K |
Not even a folly brightens there | K |
Will they yet brighten never never | D |
Then shut the book O God for ever | D |
