nulla tuum nobis subducet femina lectum etc Lib iv CarmA
-
-
Never shall woman's smile have powerB
To win me from those gentle charmsC
Thus swore I in that happy hourB
When Love first gave thee to my armsC
-
And still alone thou charm'st my sightD
Still tho' our city proudly shineE
With forms and faces fair and brightD
I see none fair or bright but thineE
-
Would thou wert fair for only meA
And couldst no heart but mine allureF
To all men else unpleasing beA
So shall I feel my prize secureF
-
Oh love like mine ne'er wants the zestG
Of others' envy others' praiseH
But in its silence safely blestG
Broods o'er a bliss it ne'er betraysH
-
Charm of my life by whose sweet powerB
All cares are husht all ills subduedI
My light in even the darkest hourB
My crowd in deepest solitudeI
-
No not tho' heaven itself sent downJ
Some maid of more than heavenly charmsC
With bliss undreamt thy bard to crownJ
Would he for her forsake those armsC
