Thoughts On The Present Government Of Ireland Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCC DDEEFF GGCCHHIJKKLL CCMMMKC

Oft have I seen in gay equestrian prideA
Some well rouged youth round Astley's Circus rideA
Two stately steeds standing with graceful straddleB
Like him of Rhodes with foot on either saddleB
While to soft tunes some jigs and some andantesC
He steers around his light paced RosinantesC
-
So rides along with canter smooth and pleasantD
That horseman bold Lord Anglesea at presentD
Papist and Protestant the coursers twainE
That lend their necks to his impartial reinE
And round the ring each honored as they goF
With equal pressure from his gracious toeF
-
To the old medley tune half Patrick's DayG
And half Boyne Water take their cantering wayG
While Peel the showman in the middle cracksC
His long lasht whip to cheer the doubtful hacksC
Ah ticklish trial of equestrian artH
How blest if neither steed would bolt or startH
If Protestant's old restive tricks were goneI
And Papist's winkers could be still kept onJ
But no false hopes not even the great DucrowK
'Twixt two such steeds could 'scape an overthrowK
If solar hacks played Pha ton a trickL
What hope alas from hackneys lunaticL
-
If once my Lord his graceful balance losesC
Or fails to keep each foot where each horse choosesC
If Peel but gives one extra touch of whipM
To Papist's tail or Protestant's ear tipM
That instant ends their glorious horsmanshipM
Off bolt the severed steeds for mischief freeK
And down between them plumps Lord AngleseaC
