Tho' Humble The Banquet Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI JKJK

Tho' humble the banquet to which I invite theeA
Thou'lt find there the best a poor bard can commandB
Eyes beaming with welcome shall throng round to light theeA
And Love serve the feast with his own willing handB
-
And tho' Fortune may seem to have turned from the dwellingC
Of him thou regardest her favoring rayD
Thou wilt find there a gift all her treasures excellingC
Which proudly he feels hath ennobled his wayD
-
'Tis that freedom of mind which no vulgar dominionE
Can turn from the path a pure conscience approvesF
Which with hope in the heart and no chain on the pinionE
Holds upwards its course to the light which it lovesG
-
'Tis this makes the pride of his humble retreatH
And with this tho' of all other treasures bereavedI
The breeze of his garden to him is more sweetH
Than the costliest incense that Pomp e'er receivedI
-
Then come if a board so untempting hath powerJ
To win thee from grandeur its best shall be thineK
And there's one long the light of the bard's happy bowerJ
Who smiling will blend her bright welcome with mineK
