The Two Loves Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCED FGFGHIJED KLKMNDNED OPOPQRQER SSSSTRTUR

There are two Loves the poet singsA
Both born of Beauty at a birthB
The one akin to heaven hath wingsA
The other earthly walks on earthB
With this thro' bowers below we playC
With that thro' clouds above we soarD
With both perchance may lose our wayC
Then tell me whichE
Tell me which shall we adoreD
-
The one when tempted down from airF
At Pleasure's fount to lave his lipG
Nor lingers long nor oft will dareF
His wing within the wave to dipG
While plunging deep and long beneathH
The other bathes him o'er and o'erI
In that sweet current even to deathJ
Then tell me whichE
Tell me which shall we adoreD
-
The boy of heaven even while he liesK
In Beauty's lap recalls his homeL
And when most happy inly sighsK
For something happier still to comeM
While he of earth too fully blestN
With this bright world to dream of moreD
Sees all his heaven on Beauty's breastN
Then tell me whichE
Tell me which shall we adoreD
-
The maid who heard the poet singO
These twin desires of earth and skyP
And saw while one inspired his stringO
The other glistened in his eyeP
To name the earthlier boy ashamedQ
To chose the other fondly loathR
At length all blushing she exclaimedQ
Ask not whichE
Oh ask not which we'll worship bothR
-
The extremes of each thus taught to shunS
With hearts and souls between them givenS
When weary of this earth with oneS
We'll with the other wing to heavenS
Thus pledged the maid her vow of blissT
And while one Love wrote down the oathR
The other sealed it with a kissT
And Heaven looked onU
Heaven looked on and hallowed bothR
