The Song Of O'ruark, Prince Of Breffni Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABACAC ADADEFEF EGEGHIHI HEHEJKEK

The valley lay smiling before meA
Where lately I left her behindB
Yet I trembled and something hung o'er meA
That sadden'd the joy of my mindB
I look'd for the lamp which she told meA
Should shine when her Pilgrim return'dC
But though darkness began to infold meA
No lamp from the battlements burn'dC
-
I flew to her chamber 'twas lonelyA
As if the loved tenant lay deadD
Ah would it were death and death onlyA
But no the young false one had fledD
And there hung the lute that could softenE
My very worst pains into blissF
While the hand that had waked it so oftenE
Now throbb'd to a proud rival's kissF
-
There was a time falsest of womenE
When Breffni's good sword would have soughtG
That man through a million of foemenE
Who dared but to wrong thee in thoughtG
While now oh degenerate daughterH
Of Erin how fallen is thy fameI
And through ages of bondage and slaughterH
Our country shall bleed for thy shameI
-
Already the curse is upon herH
And strangers her valleys profaneE
They come to divide to dishonourH
And tyrants they long will remainE
But onward the green banner rearingJ
Go flesh every sword to the hiltK
On our side is Virtue and ErinE
On theirs is the Saxon and GuiltK
