The Homeward March Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EEFBDF ABCD GHGH IIJKKJ LALC

Be still my heart I hear them comeA
Those sounds announce my lover nearB
The march that brings our warriors homeC
Proclaims he'll soon be hereD
-
Hark the distant treadE
O'er the mountain's headE
While hills and dales repeat the soundF
And the forest deerB
Stand still to hearD
As those echoing steps ring roundF
-
Be still my heart I hear them comeA
Those sounds that speak my soldier nearB
Those joyous steps seem winged fox homeC
Rest rest he'll soon be hereD
-
But hark more faint the footsteps growG
And now they wind to distant gladesH
Not here their home alas they goG
To gladden happier maidsH
-
Like sounds in a dreamI
The footsteps seemI
As down the hills they die awayJ
And the march whose songK
So pealed alongK
Now fades like a funeral layJ
-
'Tis past 'tis o'er hush heart thy painL
And tho' not here alas they comeA
Rejoice for those to whom that strainL
Brings sons and lovers homeC
