FIRST CUPBEARERA
-
Drink of this cup Osiris sipsB
The same in his halls belowC
And the same he gives to cool the lipsB
Of the dead who downward goC
-
Drink of this cup the water withinD
Is fresh from Lethe's streamE
'Twill make the past with all its sinD
And all its pain and sorrows seemE
Like a long forgotten dreamE
The pleasure whose charmsF
Are steeped in woeC
The knowledge that harmsF
The soul to knowC
-
The hope that brightG
As the lake of the wasteH
Allures the sightG
And mocks the tasteH
-
The love that bindsI
Its innocent wreathJ
Where the serpent windsK
In venom beneathJ
-
All that of evil or false by theeL
Hath ever been known or seenM
Shalt melt away in this cup and beL
Forgot as it never had beenD
-
SECOND CUPBEARERA
-
Drink of this cup when Isis ledN
Her boy of old to the beaming skyO
She mingled a draught divine and saidN
Drink of this cup thou'lt never dieO
-
Thus do I say and sing to theeL
Heir of that boundless heaven on highO
Though frail and fallen and lost thou beL
Drink of this cup thou'lt never dieO
-
-
-
And Memory too with her dreams shall comeP
Dreams of a former happier dayQ
When heaven was still the spirit's homeR
And her wings had not yet fallen awayQ
-
Glimpses of glory ne'er forgotS
That tell like gleams on a sunset seaL
What once hath been what now is notS
But oh what again shall brightly beL
