Scepticism Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFGF HIHI JKJK LMLM NONF BKBK PQPQ

Ere Psyche drank the cup that shedA
Immortal Life into her soulB
Some evil spirit poured 'tis saidA
One drop of Doubt into the bowlB
-
Which mingling darkly with the streamC
To Psyche's lips she knew not whyD
Made even that blessed nectar seemC
As tho' its sweetness soon would dieD
-
Oft in the very arms of LoveE
A chill came o'er her heart a fearF
That Death might even yet removeG
Her spirit from that happy sphereF
-
Those sunny ringlets she exclaimedH
Twining them round her snowy fingersI
That forehead where a light unnamedH
Unknown on earth for ever lingersI
-
Those lips thro' which I feel the breathJ
Of Heaven itself whene'er they severK
Say are they mine beyond all deathJ
My own hereafter and for everK
-
Smile not I know that starry browL
Those ringlets and bright lips of thineM
Will always shine as they do nowL
But shall I live to see them shineM
-
In vain did Love say Turn thine eyesN
On all that sparkles round thee hereO
Thou'rt now in heaven where nothing diesN
And in these arms what canst thou fearF
-
In vain the fatal drop that stoleB
Into that cup's immortal treasureK
Had lodged its bitter near her soulB
And gave a tinge to every pleasureK
-
And tho' there ne'er was transport givenP
Like Psyche's with that radiant boyQ
Here is the only face in heavenP
That wears a cloud amid its joyQ
