View of the Lake of Geneva from the Jura Anxious to reach it before the Sun went down Obliged to proceed on Foot Alps Mont Blanc Effect of the SceneA
-
-
'Twas late the sun had almost shoneB
His last and best when I ran onC
Anxious to reach that splendid viewD
Before the daybeams quite withdrewD
And feeling as all feel on firstE
Approaching scenes where they are toldF
Such glories on their eyes will burstE
As youthful bards in dreams beholdF
-
'Twas distant yet and as I ranG
Full often was my wistful gazeH
Turned to the sun who now beganG
To call in all his out posts raysH
And form a denser march of lightI
Such as beseems a hero's flightI
Oh how I wisht for JOSHUA'S powerJ
To stay the brightness of that hourJ
But no the sun still less becameK
Diminisht to a speck as splendidL
And small as were those tongues of flameK
That on the Apostles' heads descendedL
-
'Twas at this instant while there glowedM
This last intensest gleam of lightI
Suddenly thro' the opening roadM
The valley burst upon my sightI
That glorious valley with its LakeN
And Alps on Alps in clusters swellingO
Mighty and pure and fit to makeN
The ramparts of a Godhead's dwellingO
-
I stood entranced as Rabbins sayP
This whole assembled gazing worldQ
Will stand upon that awful dayP
When the Ark's Light aloft unfurledQ
Among the opening clouds shall shineR
Divinity's own radiant signR
-
Mighty MONT BLANC thou wert to meS
That minute with thy brow in heavenT
As sure a sign of DeityS
As e'er to mortal gaze was givenT
Nor ever were I destined yetU
To live my life twice o'er againV
Can I the deep felt awe forgetU
The dream the trance that rapt me thenV
-
'Twas all that consciousness of powerJ
And life beyond this mortal hourJ
Those mountings of the soul withinW
At thoughts of Heaven as birds beginW
By instinct in the cage to riseX
When near their time for change of skiesX
That proud assurance of our claimK
To rank among the Sons of LightI
Mingled with shame oh bitter shameK
At having riskt that splendid rightI
For aught that earth thro' all its rangeY
Of glories offers in exchangeY
'Twas all this at that instant broughtZ
Like breaking sunshine o'er my thoughtZ
'Twas all this kindled to a glowA2
Of sacred zeal which could it shineR
Thus purely ever man might growA2
Even upon earth a thing divineR
And be once more the creature madeB2
To walk unstained the Elysian shadeB2
-
No never shall I lose the traceC2
Of what I've felt in this bright placeC2
And should my spirit's hope grow weakD2
Should I oh God e'er doubt thy powerJ
This mighty scene again I'll seekD2
At the same calm and glowing hourJ
And here at the sublimest shrineR
That Nature ever reared to TheeS
Rekindle all that hope divineR
And feel my immortalityS
