Oh! Blame Not The Bard.[1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDED FGFGHIHA JKJKLMLM HNHNOPOP

Oh blame not the bard if he fly to the bowersA
Where Pleasure lies carelessly smiling at FameB
He was born for much more and in happier hoursA
His soul might have burned with a holier flameB
The string that now languishes loose o'er the lyreC
Might have bent a proud bow to the warrior's dartD
And the lip which now breathes but the song of desireE
Might have poured the full tide of a patriot's heartD
-
But alas for his country her pride is gone byF
And that spirit is broken which never would bendG
O'er the ruin her children in secret must sighF
For 'tis treason to love her and death to defendG
Unprized are her sons till they've learned to betrayH
Undistinguished they live if they shame not their siresI
And the torch that would light them thro' dignity's wayH
Must be caught from the pile where their country expiresA
-
Then blame not the bard if in pleasure's soft dreamJ
He should try to forget what he never can healK
Oh give but a hope let a vista but gleamJ
Thro' the gloom of his country and mark how he'll feelK
That instant his heart at her shrine would lay downL
Every passion it nurst every bliss it adoredM
While the myrtle now idly entwined with his crownL
Like the wreath of Harmodius should cover his swordM
-
But tho' glory be gone and tho' hope fade awayH
Thy name loved Erin shall live in his songsN
Not even in the hour when his heart is most gayH
Will he lose the remembrance of thee and thy wrongsN
The stranger shall hear thy lament on his plainsO
The sigh of thy harp shall be sent o'er the deepP
Till thy masters themselves as they rivet thy chainsO
Shall pause at the song of their captive and weepP
