Odes Of Anacreon - Ode Xxxvii Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD EFGGHHIJKKLLMMNO

'Twas night and many a circling bowlA
Had deeply warmed my thirsty soulA
As lulled in slumber I was laidB
Bright visions o'er my fancy playedB
With maidens blooming as the dawnC
I seemed to skim the opening lawnC
Light on tiptoe bathed in dewD
We flew and sported as we flewD
-
Some ruddy striplings who lookt onE
With cheeks that like the wine god's shoneF
Saw me chasing free and wildG
These blooming maids and slyly smiledG
Smiled indeed with wanton gleeH
Though none could doubt they envied meH
And still I flew and now had caughtI
The panting nymphs and fondly thoughtJ
To gather from each rosy lipK
A kiss that Jove himself might sipK
When sudden all my dream of joysL
Blushing nymphs and laughing boysL
All were gone Alas I saidM
Sighing for the illusion fledM
Again sweet sleep that scene restoreN
Oh let me dream it o'er and o'erO
