'Twas noon of night when round the poleA
The sullen Bear is seen to rollA
And mortals wearied with the dayB
Are slumbering all their cares awayB
An infant at that dreary hourC
Came weeping to my silent bowerC
And waked me with a piteous prayerD
To shield him from the midnight airD
And who art thou I waking cryE
That bid'st my blissful visions flyE
Ah gentle sire the infant saidF
In pity take me to thy shedF
Nor fear deceit a lonely childG
I wander o'er the gloomy wildG
Chill drops the rain and not a rayB
Illumes the drear and misty wayB
-
I heard the baby's tale of woeH
I heard the bitter night winds blowH
And sighing for his piteous fateI
I trimmed my lamp and oped the gateI
'Twas Love the little wandering spriteJ
His pinion sparkled through the nightJ
I knew him by his bow and dartK
I knew him by my fluttering heartK
Fondly I take him in and raiseL
The dying embers' cheering blazeL
Press from his dank and clinging hairD
The crystals of the freezing airD
And in my hand and bosom holdM
His little fingers thrilling coldM
-
And now the embers' genial rayB
Had warmed his anxious fears awayB
I pray thee said the wanton childG
My bosom trembled as he smiledG
I pray thee let me try my bowN
For through the rain I've wandered soH
That much I fear the midnight showerC
Has injured its elastic powerC
The fatal bow the urchin drewO
Swift from the string the arrow flewO
As swiftly flew as glancing flameP
And to my inmost spirit cameP
Fare thee well I heard him sayB
As laughing wild he winged awayB
Fare thee well for now I knowH
The rain has not relaxt my bowN
It still can send a thrilling dartK
As thou shalt own with all thy heartK
