-
Strew me a fragrant bed of leavesB
Where lotus with the myrtle weavesB
And while in luxury's dream I sinkC
Let me the balm of Bacchus drinkC
In this sweet hour of revelryD
Young Love shall my attendant beD
Drest for the task with tunic roundE
His snowy neck and shoulders boundE
Himself shall hover by my sideF
And minister the racy tideF
-
Oh swift as wheels that kindling rollG
Our life is hurrying to the goalG
A scanty dust to feed the windH
Is all the trace 'twill leave behindH
Then wherefore waste the rose's bloomI
Upon the cold insensate tombI
Can flowery breeze or odor's breathJ
Affect the still cold sense of deathJ
Oh no I ask no balm to steepK
With fragrant tears my bed of sleepK
But now while every pulse is glowingL
Now let me breathe the balsam flowingL
Now let the rose with blush of fireM
Upon my brow in sweets expireN
And bring the nymph whose eye hath powerM
To brighten even death's cold hourM
Yes Cupid ere my shade retireN
To join the blest elysian choirM
With wine and love and social cheerO
I'll make my own elysium hereP
