'Twas in a mocking dream of nightB
I fancied I had wings as lightB
As a young birds and flew as fleetC
While Love around whose beauteous feetC
I knew not why hung chains of leadD
Pursued me as I trembling fledD
And strange to say as swift as thoughtE
Spite of my pinions I was caughtF
What does the wanton Fancy meanG
By such a strange illusive sceneG
I fear she whispers to my breastH
That you sweet maid have stolen its restH
That though my fancy for a whileI
Hath hung on many a woman's smileI
I soon dissolved each passing vowJ
And ne'er was caught by love till nowJ
