Odes Of Anacreon - Ode Xxix. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJKK LL

Yes loving is a painful thrillA
And not to love more painful stillA
But oh it is the worst of painB
To love and not be loved againC
Affection now has fled from earthD
Nor fire of genius noble birthD
Nor heavenly virtue can beguileE
From beauty's cheek one favoring smileE
Gold is the woman's only themeF
Gold is the woman's only dreamF
Oh never be that wretch forgivenG
Forgive him not indignant heavenG
Whose grovelling eyes could first adoreH
Whose heart could pant for sordid oreH
Since that devoted thirst beganI
Man has forgot to feel for manI
The pulse of social life is deadJ
And all its fonder feelings fledJ
War too has sullied Nature's charmsK
For gold provokes the world to armsK
And oh the worst of all its artsL
It renders asunder loving heartsL
