When wine I quaff before my eyesB
Dreams of poetic glory riseB
And freshened by the goblet's dewsC
My soul invokes the heavenly MuseC
When wine I drink all sorrow's o'erD
I think of doubts and fears no moreE
But scatter to the railing windF
Each gloomy phantom of the mindF
When I drink wine the ethereal boyG
Bacchus himself partakes my joyG
And while we dance through vernal bowersH
Whose every breath comes fresh from flowersH
In wine he makes my senses swimI
Till the gale breathes of naught but himI
-
Again I drink and lo there seemsJ
A calmer light to fill my dreamsJ
The lately ruffled wreath I spreadK
With steadier hand around my headK
Then take the lyre and sing how blestL
The life of him who lives at restL
But then comes witching wine againM
With glorious woman in its trainN
And while rich perfumes round me riseB
That seem the breath of woman's sighsB
Bright shapes of every hue and formO
Upon my kindling fancy swarmO
Till the whole world of beauty seemsJ
To crowd into my dazzled dreamsJ
When thus I drink my heart refinesP
And rises as the cup declinesP
Rises in the genial flowQ
That none but social spirits knowQ
When with young revellers round the bowlR
The old themselves grow young in soulR
Oh when I drink true joy is mineS
There's bliss in every drop of wineS
All other blessings I have knownT
I scarcely dared to call my ownT
But this the Fates can ne'er destroyG
Till death o'ershadows all my joyG
