From rise of morn till set of sunC
I've seen the mighty Mohawk runC
And as I markt the woods of pineD
Along his mirror darkly shineD
Like tall and gloomy forms that passE
Before the wizard's midnight glassE
And as I viewed the hurrying paceF
With which he ran his turbid raceF
Rushing alike untried and wildG
Through shades that frowned and flowers that smiledG
Flying by every green recessH
That wooed him to its calm caressH
Yet sometimes turning with the windI
As if to leave one look behindI
Oft have I thought and thinking sighedJ
How like to thee thou restless tideJ
May be the lot the life of himA
Who roams along thy water's brimA
Through what alternate wastes of woeK
And flowers of joy my path may goK
How many a sheltered calm retreatL
May woo the while my weary feetL
While still pursuing still unblestL
I wander on nor dare to restL
But urgent as the doom that callsM
Thy water to its destined fallsM
I feel the world's bewildering forceN
Hurry my heart's devoted courseN
From lapse to lapse till life be doneC
And the spent current cease to runC
-
One only prayer I dare to makeO
As onward thus my course I takeO
Oh be my falls as bright as thineD
May heaven's relenting rainbow shineD
Upon the mist that circles meA
As soft as now it hangs o'er theeA
