Forget Not The Field Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GGGG EHEH

Forget not the field where they perish'dA
The truest the last of the braveB
All gone and the bright hope we cherish'dA
Gone with them and quench'd in their graveB
-
Oh could we from death but recoverC
Those hearts as they bounded beforeD
In the face of high heaven to fight overC
That combat for freedom once moreD
-
Could the chain for an instant be rivenE
Which Tyranny flung round us thenF
No 'tis not in Man nor in HeavenE
To let Tyranny bind it againF
-
But 'tis past and though blazon'd in storyG
The name of our Victor may beG
Accurst is the march of that gloryG
Which treads o'er the hearts of the freeG
-
For dearer the grave or the prisonE
Illumed by one patriot nameH
Than the trophies of all who have risenE
On Liberty's ruins to fameH
