I saw it all in Fancy's glassA
Herself the fair the wild magicianB
Who bade this splendid day dream passA
And named each gliding apparitionB
-
'Twas like a torch race such as theyC
Of Greece performed in ages goneD
When the fleet youths in long arrayC
Past the bright torch triumphant onE
-
I saw the expectant nations standF
To catch the coming flame in turnG
I saw from ready hand to handF
The clear tho' struggling glory burnG
-
And oh their joy as it came nearH
'Twas in itself a joy to seeI
While Fancy whispered in my earJ
That torch they pass is LibertyI
-
And each as she received the flameK
Lighted her altar with its rayC
Then smiling to the next who cameK
Speeded it on its sparkling wayC
-
From ALBION first whose ancient shrineL
Was furnisht with the fire alreadyI
COLUMBIA caught the boon divineL
And lit a flame like ALBION'S steadyI
-
The splendid gift then GALLIA tookM
And like a wild Bacchante raisingN
The brand aloft its sparkles shookM
As she would set the world a blazingN
-
Thus kindling wild so fierce and highO
Her altar blazed into the airP
That ALBION to that fire too nighO
Shrunk back and shuddered at its glareP
-
Next SPAIN so new was light to herQ
Leapt at the torch but ere the sparkR
That fell upon her shrine could stirQ
'Twas quenched and all again was darkR
-
Yet no not quenched a treasure worthS
So much to mortals rarely diesT
Again her living light lookt forthU
And shone a beacon in all eyesT
-
Who next received the flame alasA
Unworthy NAPLES shame of shamesV
That ever thro' such hands should passA
That brightest of all earthly flamesV
-
Scarce had her fingers touched the torchW
When frighted by the sparks it shedX
Nor waiting even to feel the scorchW
She dropt it to the earth and fledX
-
And fallen it might have long remainedY
But GREECE who saw her moment nowZ
Caught up the prize tho' prostrate stainedY
And waved it round her beauteous browZ
-
And Fancy bade me mark where o'erQ
Her altar as its flame ascendedA2
Fair laurelled spirits seemed to soarB2
Who thus in song their voices blendedA2
-
Shine shine for ever glorious FlameK
Divinest gift of Gods to menC2
From GREECE thy earliest splendor cameK
To GREECE thy ray returns againC2
-
Take Freedom take thy radiant roundD2
When dimmed revive when lost returnG
Till not a shrine thro' earth be foundD2
On which thy glories shall not burnG
