Though sorrow long has worn my heartA
Though every day I've counted o'erB
Hath brought a new and quickening smartA
To wounds that rankled fresh beforeC
-
Though in my earliest life bereftD
Of tender links by nature tiedE
Though hope deceived and pleasure leftD
Though friends betrayed and foes beliedE
-
I still had hopes for hope will stayF
After the sunset of delightG
So like the star which ushers dayF
We scarce can think it heralds nightG
-
I hoped that after all its strifeH
My weary heart at length should restI
And feinting from the waves of lifeH
Find harbor in a brother's breastI
-
That brother's breast was warm with truthJ
Was bright with honor's purest rayF
He was the dearest gentlest youthJ
Ah why then was he torn awayF
-
He should have stayed have lingered hereK
To soothe his Julia's every woeL
He should have chased each bitter tearM
And not have caused those tears to flowL
-
We saw within his soul expandN
The fruits of genius nurst by tasteO
While Science with a fostering handN
Upon his brow her chaplet placedO
-
We saw by bright degrees his mindP
Grow rich in all that makes men dearQ
Enlightened social and refinedP
In friendship firm in love sincereQ
-
Such was the youth we loved so wellR
And such the hopes that fate deniedE
We loved but ah could scarcely tellR
How deep how dearly till he diedE
-
Close as the fondest links could strainS
Twined with my very heart he grewT
And by that fate which breaks the chainS
The heart is almost broken tooT
