Rhyme Scheme: ABCB ADCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KGKG LMNM OGOG PQPQ RSTSIn slumber I prithee how is it | A |
That souls are oft taking the air | B |
And paying each other a visit | C |
While bodies are heaven knows where | B |
- | |
Last night 'tis in vain to deny it | A |
Your soul took a fancy to roam | D |
For I heard her on tiptoe so quiet | C |
Come ask whether mine was at home | D |
- | |
And mine let her in with delight | E |
And they talked and they laughed the time through | F |
For when souls come together at night | E |
There is no saying what they mayn't do | F |
- | |
And your little Soul heaven bless her | G |
Had much to complain and to say | H |
Of how sadly you wrong and oppress her | G |
By keeping her prisoned all day | H |
- | |
If I happen said she but to steal | I |
For a peep now and then to her eye | J |
Or to quiet the fever I feel | I |
Just venture abroad on a sigh | J |
- | |
In an instant she frightens me in | K |
With some phantom of prudence or terror | G |
For fear I should stray into sin | K |
Or what is still worse into error | G |
- | |
So instead of displaying my graces | L |
By daylight in language and mien | M |
I am shut up in corners and places | N |
Where truly I blush to be seen | M |
- | |
Upon hearing this piteous confession | O |
My Soul looking tenderly at her | G |
Declared as for grace and discretion | O |
He did not know much of the matter | G |
- | |
But to morrow sweet Spirit he said | P |
Be at home after midnight and then | Q |
I will come when your lady's in bed | P |
And we'll talk o'er the subject again | Q |
- | |
So she whispered a word in his ear | R |
I suppose to her door to direct him | S |
And just after midnight my dear | T |
Your polite little Soul may expect him | S |
