Before The Battle Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCCDDE FFGHH IJIJKKLLMNNMOO

By the hope within us springingA
Herald of to morrow's strifeB
By that sun whose light is bringingA
Chains or freedom death or lifeB
Oh remember life can beC
No charm for him who lives not freeC
Like the day star in the waveD
Sinks a hero in his graveD
Midst the dew fall of a nation's tearsE
-
Happy is he o'er whose declineF
The smiles of home may soothing shineF
And light him down the steep of yearsG
But oh how blest they sink to restH
Who close their eyes on victory's breastH
-
O'er his watch fire's fading embersI
Now the foeman's cheek turns whiteJ
When his heart that field remembersI
Where we tamed his tyrant mightJ
Never let him bind againK
A chain like that we broke from thenK
Hark the horn of combat callsL
Ere the golden evening fallsL
May we pledge that horn in triumph roundM
Many a heart that now beats highN
In slumber cold at night shall lieN
Nor waken even at victory's soundM
But oh how blest that hero's sleepO
O'er whom a wondering world shall weepO
