Rome: On The Palatine. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCA ABBA DEED FF

We walked where Victor Jove was shrined awhileA
And passed to Livia's rich red mural showB
Whence thridding cave and CriptoporticoC
We gained Caligula's dissolving pileA
-
And each ranked ruin tended to beguileA
The outer sense and shape itself as thoughB
It wore its marble hues its pristine glowB
Of scenic frieze and pompous peristyleA
-
When lo swift hands on strings nigh over headD
Began to melodize a waltz by StraussE
It stirred me as I stood in Caesar's houseE
Raised the old routs Imperial lyres had ledD
-
And blended pulsing life with lives long doneF
Till Time seemed fiction Past and Present oneF
