Rhyme Scheme: A BBCDEC FFGHHG IIJKKJ LLMNNM AAOPPO

A Reminiscence Of The WarA
-
-
We sat in the roomB
And praised her whomB
We saw in the portico shade outsideC
She could not hearD
What was said of herE
But smiled for its purport we did not hideC
-
Then in was broughtF
That message fraughtF
With evil fortune for her out thereG
Whom we loved that dayH
More than any could sayH
And would fain have fenced from a waft of careG
-
And the question pressedI
Like lead on each breastI
Should we cloak the tidings or call her and tellJ
It was too intenseK
A choice for our senseK
As we pondered and watched her we loved so wellJ
-
Yea spirit failed usL
At what assailed usL
How long while seeing what soon must comeM
Should we counterfeitN
No knowledge of itN
And stay the stroke that would blanch and numbM
-
And thus beforeA
For evermoreA
Joy left her we practised to beguileO
Her innocence whenP
She now and againP
Looked in and smiled us another smileO
