She told how they used to form for the country dancesB
The Triumph The New rigged ShipC
To the light of the guttering wax in the panelled mansesB
And in cots to the blink of a dipC
-
She spoke of the wild poussetting and allemandingD
On carpet on oak and on sodE
And the two long rows of ladies and gentlemen standingD
And the figures the couples trodE
-
She showed us the spot where the maypole was yearly plantedF
And where the bandsmen stoodG
While breeched and kerchiefed partners whirled and pantedH
To choose each other for goodG
-
She told of that far back day when they learnt astoundedH
Of the death of the King of FranceB
Of the Terror and then of Bonaparte's unboundedH
Ambition and arroganceB
-
Of how his threats woke warlike preparationsB
Along the southern strandI
And how each night brought tremors and trepidationsB
Lest morning should see him landI
-
She said she had often heard the gibbet creakingD
As it swayed in the lightning flashJ
Had caught from the neighbouring town a small child's shriekingD
At the cart tail under the lashJ
-
With cap framed face and long gaze into the embersB
We seated around her kneesB
She would dwell on such dead themes not as one who remembersB
But rather as one who seesB
-
She seemed one left behind of a band gone distantK
So far that no tongue could hailL
Past things retold were to her as things existentK
Things present but as a taleL
