I met a man when night was nighA
Who said with shining face and eyeA
Like Moses' after SinaiA
-
I have seen the Moulder of MonarchiesB
Realms peoples plains and hillsC
Sitting upon the sunlit seasB
And as He sat soliloquiesB
Fell from Him like an antiphonic breezeB
That pricks the waves to thrillsB
-
Meseemed that of the maimed and deadD
Mown down upon the globeE
Their plenteous blooms of promise shedD
Ere fruiting time His words were saidD
Sitting against the western web of redD
Wrapt in His crimson robeE
-
And I could catch them now and thenF
'Why let these gambling clansB
Of human Cockers pit liege menF
From mart and city dale and glenF
In death mains but to swell and swell againF
Their swollen All Empery plansB
-
'When a mere nod if my malignG
Compeer but passive keepH
Would mend that old mistake of mineG
I made with Saul and ever consignG
All Lords of War whose sanctuaries enshrineG
Liberticide to sleepH
-
'With violence the lands are spreadD
Even as in Israel's dayI
And it repenteth me I bredD
Chartered armipotents lust ledD
To feuds Yea grieves my heart as then I saidD
To see their evil way '-
-
The utterance grew and flapped like flameJ
And further speech I fearedK
But no Celestial tongued acclaimJ
And no huzzas from earthlings cameJ
And the heavens mutely masked as 'twere in shameJ
Till daylight disappearedK
-
Thus ended he as night rode highA
The man of shining face and eyeA
Like Moses' after SinaiA
-
-
