For Life I had never cared greatlyA
As worth a man's whileB
Peradventures unsoughtC
Peradventures that finished in noughtC
Had kept me from youth and through manhood till latelyA
Unwon by its styleB
-
In earliest years why I know notC
I viewed it askanceD
Conditions of doubtC
Conditions that leaked slowly outC
May haply have bent me to stand and to show notC
Much zest for its danceD
-
With symphonies soft and sweet colourE
It courted me thenF
Till evasions seemed wrongG
Till evasions gave in to its songG
And I warmed until living aloofly loomed dullerE
Than life among menF
-
Anew I found nought to set eyes onH
When lifting its handC
It uncloaked a starE
Uncloaked it from fog damps afarE
And showed its beams burning from pole to horizonI
As bright as a brandC
-
And so the rough highway forgettingJ
I pace hill and daleK
Regarding the skyL
Regarding the vision on highL
And thus re illumed have no humour for lettingJ
My pilgrimage failK
