I OLD STYLEA
-
Our songs went up and out the chimneyB
And roused the home gone husbandmenB
Our allemands our heys poussettingsC
Our hands across and back againB
Sent rhythmic throbbings through the casementsC
On to the white highwayD
Where nighted farers paused and mutteredE
Keep it up well do theyD
-
The contrabasso's measured boomingF
Sped at each bar to the parish boundsC
To shepherds at their midnight lambingsC
To stealthy poachers on their roundsC
And everybody caught full dulyB
The notes of our delightG
As Time unrobed the Youth of PromiseC
Hailed by our sanguine sightG
-
II NEW STYLEA
-
We stand in the dusk of a pine tree limbH
As if to give ear to the muffled pealI
Brought or withheld at the breeze's whimH
But our truest heed is to words that stealI
From the mantled ghost that looms in the grayD
And seems so far as our sense can seeB
To feature bereaved HumanityB
As it sighs to the imminent year its sayD
-
O stay without O stay withoutJ
Calm comely Youth untasked untiredJ
Though stars irradiate thee aboutJ
Thy entrance here is undesiredJ
Open the gate not mystic oneB
Must we avow what we would close confineB
WITH THEE GOOD FRIEND WE WOULD HAVE CONVERSE NONEB
Albeit the fault may not be thineB
